geoghraphy of tafraoute

Fly to Agadir, rent a car there and drive to Tafraout.

There is a camp site, hotels in the town and the Hotel

des Armandies where we stayed just above it.

This was around £20.00 a night for full board.

Annergui Crag Routes – This is a typical crag above the little mountain village of Annergui – it is about 600 feet high of Quartzite rock and the team which has been climbing here over the last ten years have put up four routes. Derek Walker and I climbed the route marked in red – it was scrambling up to the start of the red line, but then gave four brilliant pitches of 5a climbing.

What could you achieve if you combine a large quantity of paint and some huge rocks? In Morrocco's case, the net result of Jean Verame's creative outpourings - Les Pierres Bleues (The Blue Rocks) near Tafraoute.

In 1984 the Belgian artist and a team of Morroccan firemen teamed up to create one of the most unusual art installation pieces on the face of the planet. Armed with 18 tonnes of blue, red, violet and white paint, they sprayed it all over the granite boulders and small hills of the Anti-Atlas mountains over the course of three months.

Fortunately, King Hassan II thought it was a good idea, so it looks like they are there to stay until the paint wears off. Although they have lost their sharpness of colour, the fusion of art and nature is still mesmerising.

tafraout city

There are many small shops where you can buy all kinds of Moroccan crafts.

Although many things are old-style, you can see the power lines, satellitedishes and even the solar water heaters on the roofs of the buildings.

I've read if you're in the area, you should ask about the painted rocks...?The almond trees bloom January into February.

•Having a car in and around Tafraoute, is essential. Most
of the things here can be reached by foot, but if you don’t
have more than a couple of days, driving saves you from
walks that aren’t that great after all.

Belgian artist Jean Verame painted in 1984 rocks in blue (!) colour, in
an area some kilometres away from the centre. But today its faded, and
disappointing compared to has been done in the mountains of Tibesti in
Tchad.
So stick to nature it self, and two days are minimum when you're in
Tafraoute.

•Almost no other place in Morocco has inhabitants as
proud of keeping their sorroundings proper. The windows
of the red houses are framed by white painting, and holds a
slight resembling to the monumental architecture of Sana’
in Yemen.

But the architecture here is simpler, as the inhabitants are
more conservative. Or the simplicity could come from the weak
economy in this region, which is based upon revenues sent back home
from foreign workers in Europe, and not too profitable agriculture.

–The mountains around Tafraoute is the main
attraction. They seem to avoid gravitation, as
if they were held up by their sparkling colours
alone.

Everything is different here, people are
less friendly than in most places in Morocco, but
the rest stand out with excellence
